Periodontics
at Dentalcare TrowbridgeWhat is Periodontics?
Periodontics is the area of dentistry that helps to keep gums and the bone tissue that support your teeth healthy. Periodontics also looks at the diseases and treatment affecting these areas. The most common area within periodontics is the prevention and treatment of gum disease which is the prime cause for tooth loss.
What can be treated?
Our periodontists spend a lot of their time treating and helping to prevent gum disease. You may be referred to one of our periodontists if your dentist thinks that you are at high risk of developing gum disease or if you are showing signs of gum disease.
Gum disease is a common condition with many people developing it to a certain degree. The good news is that it is treatable. A good oral hygiene routine does not take long to establish and can make a huge impact on the health of your gums and teeth as well as your general health and well-being. However, if left untreated it can lead to tooth loss.
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and refers to the build-up of plaque on your teeth. Your gums can become inflamed and painful. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. This is where the gum begins to pull away from the tooth leaving pockets of bacteria that can become inflamed and infected.
As well as treating and preventing gum disease, our periodontists are also qualified in replacing missing teeth. They can help with dental implants, gum graft surgery and other plastic surgery relating to the gum and bone tissue which support the teeth.

Periodontal treatment
At Dentalcare Trowbridge, our dentists and hygienists work with you to develop and maintain a good oral hygiene which will prevent periodontitis. We aim always to prevent periodontitis rather than treating it and this is why regular trips to your dentist and hygienist are essential.
Initial treatment from a periodontist will consist of a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. You may have professional cleaning of the tooth root surfaces and the periodontal pockets to remove plaque and prevent further infection. If necessary, you may be given antibiotics.
